actor William Powell was the ultimate image of class and charm,
with his many tuxedo and silk pajama-clad characters. Yet he
always strove to improve his craft, and tried never to become
typecast in one type of role. A successful stage career led
to even greater success in films, and among his numerous motion
pictures some standouts include "Beau Geste," "The Great Gatsby,"
and "The Thin Man." He easily made the transition from silent
to screen star and from leading man to character actor. William
was such an asset to Warner Bros. that they gave him story approval,
an honor reserved for few actors -- then and now.
