| One of
the co-founders of United Artists at a time that most women
didn't even work, Mary Pickford was more than an Academy Award
winning actress (for her work in "Coquette"). She helped her
country during World War I by traveling throughout the nation
and encouraging people to buy Liberty Bonds. Successful and
powerful, Mary was able to get a pay raise whenever Charlie
Chaplin got one -- and for more money. Businesswoman, movie
maker, and "America's Sweetheart," Mary was one of people who
helped incorporate Beverly Hills, and one street, Pickfair,
still bears the combination of her name and that of her one-time
husband, Douglas Fairbanks. In 1958, as Mrs. Buddy Rogers, Mary
had one of the greatest jewelry collections in the world.
