Thanks
to Jack Webb, Sergeant Joe Friday is the most popular police
character in television history. Jack began in film, but it
was the series "Dragnet" that boosted his popularity with the
American public. The phrases "Just the facts, ma'am," and "My
name's Friday, I'm a cop," remain indelibly etched in the minds
of television fans. After "Dragnet," Jack returned to feature
films both as a director and an actor, and for a time was head
of Warner Television, a position not normally associated with
fine actors.
