| Never before,
and never since, has there been a cheaper man in Hollywood than
Jack Benny. Or so his legions of fans believed, due to Jack's
never-ending charade of penny-pinching jokes he made about himself
throughout his career. In reality, he was one of the most loved
entertainers in show business. Like so many performers of Jack's
generation, he began in vaudeville, then graduated to film,
radio, and finally, television. Jack's violin was as much a
part of the act as impeccable comic timing, and his universal
appeal helped make him one of the highest paid entertainers
of his era.
